The human story of a place is often the most fascinating. The details of explorers' journeys, battles fought, railroads built, towns and industries developed, and changes faced by those who came before us can provide insights into the aspirations and motivations of individuals and societies. In addition, much of our national culture and heritage is tied to historic activities or places.
Preservation and communication of these stories from the past form a vital part of the NPS mission. Whether pertaining to American Indian tribes who inhabited the area, or to those involved in US western expansion activities, these stories help us to understand our own place in the timeline of American history. Research into the past continues as scholars sort through records and study the stories of human endeavors of past generations.
